Prep for Art on the Lawn - THIS WEEKEND!

Art on the Lawn is this weekend! Saturday, September 24, 2011, 10-4pm on the lawn of the Giles Co. Courthouse, Pearisburg! Come out to see my newest, and very different works. Most everything will be smaller in scale, and this summer I've been studying the use of the palette knife, trying out skills gathered during my stay at Nimrod Hall. All works are framed and all under $150.
Irene's Approach 8 x 10 oil on panel $135.00
Summer on The New 8 x 10 oil on panel $135.00
On the Ice, Niles Pond (Gloucester MA) 8 x 16 $200.00
Nimrod #5, Open Field 8 x 10 oil on panel $135.00
Study, Bean Tree 8 x 8 oil on canvas $125
Rocks Cluster, Jasper Hill 8 X 10 oil on panel $135.00
Sundown over Poor Farm 9 X 12 oil on panel $145.00
Summer Dunes, Crane Beach 18 X 24 oil on canvas $295.00 My only large, new piece for the show is of the sand dunes at beautiful Crane Beach, located in Ipswich, MA. I took inspiration from the undulating sandy dunes, and unique plant life growing on this expansive beach on the North Shore. I tried to keep things loose, incorporating new skills. It is framed in a simple, white wash driftwood frame with a linen liner. If you cannot make it out to Giles, I would be happy to ship anywhere. Stay tuned for more specifics from a recent trip to Gloucester and Essex, MA, where I completed small oil sketches of Brace Cove, Good Harbor Beach, Bass Rocks, and Halibut Point State park! joli

Ready for Richmond Show!

I am finally ready for a special showing of my work in Richmond! My newest work, along with some of my very first paintings, will be on display at the Lora Robins Gallery from Nature at the University of Richmond this coming weekend. Installation will take place Thursday, with the gallery open from 1-5 Friday and Saturday, June 13-14. I will speak about my work and creative process in an art talk at 2:30pm on Saturday, June 14th. The talk will take place in the gallery.

Several new pieces will be on display for sale. See some images here. My new pieces, all oil on canvas, feature the rolling hills of Floyd, VA, Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester, MA, as well as a frosty, frozen Niles Pond in East Gloucester, MA.

Look forward to see you all out in Richmond!

Preparing for the Richmond show!

I recently visited the campus of my alma mater, University of Richmond, to see the installation/gallery space for my upcoming special showing with one of my former classmates. Colleen Phelon Hall and I will be installing our work for a special showing at our 20 year class reunion.

The show will be held in the Lora Robins Gallery on Richmond Way starting Thursday, June 2nd for 4 days. Surprisingly, the space is much larger than either of us anticipated....very exciting!

There will be an artist's talk on Saturday, June 4th at 2:30pm in the gallery.

Check back here for further details and photos!

Brace Cove Panorama - PROGRESS!

I've been hammering away at the panorama piece of Brace Cove. As a reminder, the Cove is located in East Gloucester, MA, and was a favorite subject of Luminist painter Fitz Henry Lane, who resided in Gloucester.

I've worked at filling in the landscape features, adding the surf, as well as the homes/buildings surrounding the cove. I also didn't like my initial sky, so I changed it, and I'm pleased. I feel it really captures the late-March sunny day of one of my last visits.

Next to bring out is the sandy, rocky shoreline.....

Until next time....get out there and paint!

"Morning Moon"

I've been inspired by the amazingly peaceful mornings heading into winter. The skies are soft pastels, and the fog settles into the countryside here in the rolling hills of Floyd, VA. After watching the moon set one morning behind my house, I felt compelled to bring the scene to life on canvas.

Choosing the right tones has been a challenge. First, I did a quick sketch with color, starting on a white canvas. I've since revisited the canvas to deepen the landscape, trees, working my way down the canvas. I don't always work in this fashion, but doing so has made it easier to define the values from misty to solid as the land comes into focus.

Truly a fun piece, while experiencing a good lesson in values. Look for it to be available early Spring.

On tap will be a studio open house in celebration with the Round the Mountain Artisan Trail coming up Friday, June 10th thru Wednesday, June 15th. I am so excited about my new works in progress, as well as some different opportunities this year. Stay tuned!
